This book documents the struggles and counter-cultures in Brittany and Loire-Atlantique, as chronicled by filmmakers, photographers, artists and activists from 1968 onwards. An extension of the exhibition Contre-Vents at the Grand Café, centre d’art contemporain de Saint-Nazaire (2019), it traces the intersections between peasant and worker struggles, questions of identity and the environment, and proposes a line of flight from the collective actions to reclaim agricultural land in the 1970s to the ZAD of Notre-Dame-des-Landes.
Contre-Vents is not a book of history, but rather of genealogies, which above all restores artistic experiences and their articulation with these struggles: Armand Gatti’s collective theatre, Anjela Duval’s peasant poetry, the cinema of struggle of the Cent Fleurs and Torr e Benn collectives, René Vautier, Carole Roussopoulos, Nicole Le Garrec and many others. These works engage a thought of emancipation that still has things to teach us today.
