“The history of architecture is often read in terms of periods, each with its own “zeitgeist” (meaning “spirit of leisure”) and movements, each with its own architectural language.

What happens if we move away from this concept of ‘zeitgeist’ and use a cyclical history model instead? In the 1970s and 1980s, this question was generally considered from the seemingly mutually exclusive perspectives of the modern, anti-modern and post-modern positions. In the last two decades, contemporary European architecture has developed a different frame of reference, in which the horizon is no longer provided by the architecture of the modern movement.

OASE 109 traces how, in the context of this expanded frame of reference, a different understanding of modernity has emerged.”
