Using an immense variety of techniques that he appropriates, improves or even invents, Laurent Lafolie first produces objects that are the vehicles of images that he wants to share with us. He constantly reminds us of the obligatory materiality of the image, in skilful variations that range from the sophisticated lightness of transparent Japanese paper that shakes in the slightest breath of air, to the hardness of ceramic plates or the transparent fragility of porcelain sheets, not to mention the mysterious inscription of form on stretched threads.
For the first time, he, whose fine treatment of grey and black and white is well known, invites us to make proposals in colour, always so varied and subtle. In all this work, in this craft that knows all the manufacturing secrets to amaze us with images that question temporality and the nature of representation, everything is played out between revelation and disappearance.
Because image rhymes here with magic and we are therefore confronted with a silent word and writings.
