Since 2015, Charlotte Dumas has been studying the Japanese island of Yonaguni and the critically endangered breed of native horses that roam freely through it. A tragic part of the island’s past shines through in her typically intimate films and photographs. In round glass objects, ballerinas, or a horse’s belt, a special blue colour returns to link Japanese nature, the island’s horses, and three young girls, whose fiery independence brings new energy to Yonaguni; colour photos.
