Little studied until very recently, lianas still retain a halo of mystery. This book traces their presence through geological time, describes their habitats, their various strategies for adapting to the biotopes they colonise, the many aspects of their reproduction, their wealth of active molecules and their resilience. It also discusses the relationship between lianas and trees, as well as with the animals and human societies they have helped to feed and care for since the dawn of time.
From the most modest to the most emblematic, lianas still have much to contribute to our knowledge of the living world: this book is a plea for them to be better known and better respected.

Annik Schnitzler, an honorary professor at the University of Lorraine, has devoted her research to forest ecology in temperate and tropical regions, and more particularly to the study of lianas. She is already the author of several books for the general public, including Forêts sauvages (Glénat, 2020).
Claire Arnold has a doctorate in biology and specialises in ecology and population genetics. Her research first focused on the wild vine, then on its cultivated relative. She then travelled the world’s forests to better understand the role of lianas in forest ecosystems.
