An artist is invited to do a three-month residency on an island. The artist has no name, we don’t know what kind of projects he does, and the island is not named or located either. We can guess that he is a contemporary artist. Apart from that, the atmosphere of the story quickly shifts to the supernatural. The story is divided into chapters, each one corresponding to an encounter with an inhabitant of the island.
The artist will listen to the life stories of each of them in turn, in the hope of making a collection of testimonies that can be presented in artistic form. The problem is that each story presents an obstacle that makes it untransferable. Either the testimony is too absurd, or too violent, or it mentions illegal things, or it is far too ridiculous and pathetic… But as he encounters each person, the artist will form a strong bond with them and become involved in the intrigues and mysteries of the island.
“L’Invité fantastique” is the second comic book by Nina Lechartier, whose first book “Un Soir de fête” was published by Magnani in 2021 (selected at the Angoulême Festival that same year).
