Antoni Tapies, la pratique de l'art

This book was published to coincide with the retrospective marking the centenary of the birth of Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona, 1923-2012), a key figure in post-war modern art. It features a number of key works from each of the artist’s periods: after his self-portraits and works influenced by Surrealism and Dadaism, in the 1950s Tàpies produced his first matierist paintings, incorporating raw materials, stains and signs. Formal and material experimentation lay at the heart of his practice, and would continue until the 1990s. To admire these paintings, drawings, collages and sculptures is also to explore the mystical, philosophical and political dimensions of Antoni Tàpies’ universe.

The exhibition Antoni Tàpies. The Practice of Art was organised by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, in collaboration with Bozar – Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels and the Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Barcelona, as part of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and Tàpies Year. The catalogue includes an essay by Manuel J. Borja-Villel and a selection of Antoni Tàpies’ writings.

Dit boek hoort bij de overzichtstentoonstelling die wordt georganiseerd naar aanleiding van de honderdste verjaardag van de geboorte van Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona, 1923-2012), een spilfiguur uit de moderne naoorlogse kunst. Het belicht talrijke sleutelwerken uit elk van Tàpies’ artistieke periodes. Aanvankelijk maakte hij zelfportretten en door het surrealisme en het dadaïsme beïnvloede werken. In de jaren 1950 ontstonden zijn eerste materieschilderijen, waarin hij ruwe materialen, vlekken en tekerts verwerkte. Het experimenteren met vorm en materie is de kern van zijn oeuvre. Hij bleef dit doen tot in de jaren 1990. Deze schilderijen, tekeningen, collages en beeiden bewonderen, is ingaan op de mystieke, filosofische en politieke dimensies van de wereld van Antoni Tàpies.

Voor de tentoonstelling Antoni Tàpies. De praktijk van de kunst, georganiseerd in het kader van het Spaanse voorzitterschap van de Raad van de Europese Unie en van het Tàpiesjaar, werkte het Madrileense Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía samen met de Barcelonese Fundació Antoni Tàpies en Bozar – Paleis voor Schone Kunsten uit Brussel. Deze catalogus bevat een essay van Manuel J. Borja-Villel en een keuze uit de geschriften van Antoni Tàpies.
