Jeff Kowatch
Heir to the great Flemish masters, American painter Jeff Kowatch borrows from them the virtuoso technique of glazing. On canvas, he can superimpose up to a hundred layers of paint, endlessly scraped, sanded and covered, to invent abstract works, animated by a multitude of coloured circles. These same sensual shapes push and repel each other in his works on Dibond made with oil sticks. From this gentle chéos emerge an almost mystical fullness and harmony.
“Painting is alchemy, it’s the transformation of basic minerals with a brush to represent the Absolute, God, the Sublime… call it what you will, but how can this tragedy not be comical?” Jeff Kowatch
