I seem to live

“I Seem to Live” gathers different sequences from Jonas Mekas’ diaries, enriched by his visual work during the years 1950 to 1969. It offers an intimate view of the post-war underground scene in New York. This book picks up where the book “I had nowhere to go” left off. The first volume of this magnum opus, which covers the period 1950-69, was published posthumously one year after his death. It is on an equal footing with his cinematic work, which he first developed with his brother Adolfas after their arrival in New York. In 1954, the two brothers founded the magazine Film Culture, and in 1958 Jonas began writing a weekly column for The Village Voice. It was at this time that his writings, films and tireless commitment to art began to make him a pioneer of American avant-garde cinema and the barometer of the New York art scene.
