Werner Hofmann, a major art historian, wrote in 2000 the first monograph of Caspar David Friedrich, which became a reference. Hazan is now publishing it for the first time in a large format. This edition includes a historical-philosophical essay mixed with a meticulous analysis of the paintings, reproduced here in all their splendor. The documents, letters and writings offered in appendices shed light on Friedrich’s life and personality as well as his work. Werner Hofmann also tries to elucidate other aspects of Friedrich’s work, less known than his landscapes: his vision of the private and public environment of the time, the relationships between man and woman, woman as a autonomous being in society. He situates the painter in the intellectual and historical context of his time by highlighting his difficult contacts with Goethe, his affinities with the philosophy of Schleiermacher, his political opinions. A necessary book for any worshiper of the painter.
