This book Soukhos was published on the occasion of Raphaël Barontini’s residency at the Heng Long Tannery in Singapore. In an uninhibited approach, the artist mixes painting with textiles, performance and installation. His works address the historical question of representation in the history of dominant art and more particularly the lack of representation of people from non-Western countries. It is in response to this observation that Raphaël Barontini deliberately depicts real and imaginary heroes from Africa and the Caribbean in order to bring to light a new story that presents new narratives. His creations expose the richness of a hybrid culture.
