Modernités suisses
Catalogue of the exhibition of the same name, “Swiss Modernities” presents the works of this generation of artists trained in France, Germany and Italy, but who embodied the Swiss art scene at the end of the 19th century. Little-known but above all little exhibited, artists such as Felix Vallotton, Ernest Bieler, Max Buri, Giovanni and Augusto Giacometti established themselves as a generation of painters who profoundly renewed the art of their time.
“They explored the expressive, symbolic or decorative power of line and colour, while focusing on subjects drawn from the history and culture of the Swiss nation, which was in the process of being invented, in the context of the affirmation of the young federal state, created in 1848.”
