Roger FryVision and Design
Hans Theys’ selection for his storefront.
“Roger Fry was a great art critic and specialist in Italian art, who introduced the Fauves and Picasso to England and advised the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was a great friend of Virginia Woolf. This book was very important to Henry Moore, especially the passage on African sculpture and the realistic Bushman drawings. When he was twenty, Moore visited the British Museum every day to draw from an African statuette and a Mexican sculpture (a chacmool) which became the basic form for all his ‘reclining women’. Moore had found this book in a bookshop run by a Dutchman who allowed him to read in the shop and who later became his friend.
I talk about Roger Fry in this text, written on the occasion of a mural by Xavier Noiret-Thomé that you will soon find on his website.” Hans Theys
