Claire NicoleAinsi de suite
Lead pencil, coloured pencil, charcoal, grease pencil, pastel, Indian ink, pigment, gouache, acrylic, varnish: for decades, Claire Nicole has been using a whole range of techniques in an infinite combination of surprises and evidence. It is not surprising, therefore, that the monotype, this great unknown of the printmaking arts – yet cherished by great artists, Edgar Degas in particular – constitutes one of the major aspects of her work. A theatre of moving and fascinating shadows which, free of any explanatory or illustrative desire, restores to the viewer the range of emotions that the rustling of the world awakens in him, without however revealing anything of its mystery. A singular and obstinate approach to emancipate oneself as much as possible from line and angles, from a too strict geometry, and finally reach a form of freedom and plenitude rarely achieved in today’s art.
