” We know Man Ray as a photographer. He was also a painter, a draughtsman, a creator of objects and a film maker. Around a hundred works belonging to a private collection are on display, drawings and paintings by Man Ray, but also rayograms revealing the magic of objects simply placed on a sensitive film, heliogravures and other experimental pieces, notably his first two films. These works highlight the multiple facets of the work of a prolific artist: the Dada temptation that led him, with Marcel Duchamp, to “make” strange images; the adventure of free books led with Paul Éluard; the “disturbing strangeness” cultivated by the Surrealist community, and its flowering of diverted, dreamed of, reinvented objects; and finally the quest for freedom and pleasure that irrigated all of the photographer’s creation.”
