Bas Smets learned the practice from the French landscape architect Michel Desvigne and in a short time acquired an international reputation with designs for landscapes and public spaces in very diverse places in the world.
Landscapes presents how landscape design in Flanders – ‘a country without a landscape’ – has had a decisive impact on the work of Bas Smets. This first retrospective is based on the theorisation of its own methodology. The book outlines the representation of the landscape in seven autonomous stages: frame, reading, exemplary landscape, figure, writing, perception and emblem. Seven projects illustrate the step-by-step design process. Each stage has its specific image as a result. In this way, landscape design creates a series of images that are used to transform reality.
