In northern Flanders, on the banks of the Scheldt, a series of lands that have been polderised and cultivated since the Middle Ages are “returned to nature” in the context of a campaign of depopulation supported by both large-scale industry and powerful bird and nature protection organizations. Farmers, who are losing their land and their traditional way of life, are the big losers. Chris de Stoop is the defender of their point of view, in a very personal, poignant, and – at least in original Dutch – beautifully written.
