For almost twenty years, photographer Stephan Zaubitzer has traveled the world looking for cinemas, both operative and inoperative, to capture them with a large format camera. His inventory of this architecture governed by the laws of optics delivers a testimony formerly only preserved by memory. “Cinés Méditerranée” is a serie focusing on five countries of the southern coast of the Mediterranean sea: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt and Lebanon. The book accompanies an exhibition at La Chapelle des Pénitents Bleus in La Ciotat, situated across from the Eden, the oldest cinema in the world. It is prefaced by Alain Bergala and shows an extended collection of images, while including a cartographic vision of the series.
