Design-A-Book. Research & creation in Belgium

The Design-A-Book catalogue is a publication issued at the end of the exhibition of the same name, organised by the Wittockiana and the Atelier du Livre de Mariemont from February to April 2023. As well as all the maps of the exhibition and photographs of each work, it includes texts that put into perspective the creation in the field of books through the works on display in the rooms of the Wittockiana. Géraldine David, Jan Baetens and Sofiane Laghouati offer a historical and theoretical look at the trends and questions that emerged from this event, which brought together works by artists from both sides of the country, while Nadia Corazzini presents the winners of the Mariemont Research Grant in Book Creation and Design.

Photographs of the exhibition space provide a record of the event, highlighting the continuity and dialogue between the teeming worlds of book design in Wallonia, Flanders and Brussels. Finally, an address book completes the publication, providing an overview of teaching, creation, study and exhibition venues dedicated to the book arts. Published in three languages (French, Dutch and English), this catalogue is an extension of the reflections generated by the Design-A-Book exhibition, and invites us to consider the book as a workshop for contemporary practices.
