This catalogue accompanies a major retrospective exhibition on Etel Adnan in Germany and at the LaM in Villeneuve d’Ascq near Lille.
Having divided her life between Lebanon, California and France, Etel Adnan (1925-2021) was known as a writer before her name became associated with the visual arts. This volume traces her impressive artistic career, marked by a cosmopolitan personality that is both strong and discreet. It surveys her texts, paintings, tapestries and leporellos to allow for an overview of her work marked by feminism, the convergence of Arab, American and European cultures, notably through calligraphy and literature.
