Eugène Leroy: Peindre
Eugène Leroy (1910-2000) is the most outdated French painter there is. His painting loaded with materials, almost sculptural, difficult to see, neither figurative nor abstract, definitively apart and solitary, does not produce images to be consumed but requires a long stasis to discover all the dazzles. It is a dialogue, full of humility and fervor, that the painter establishes with painting and reality. The catalog lives up to the uncompromising work of Eugène Leroy with prodigious, full-page reproductions of his paintings which restore all the material, light and sculptural depth. Echoing his painting, the presentation texts of the catalog in severe blocks require an effort of reading as the work of Eugène Leroy requires an effort of vision.
This radical and sumptuous catalog is a beautiful monument to the glory of a giant, too little known, of 20th century painting!
