Hans Theys’ selection for his storefront.

“In this book, Arasse speaks admirably of Italian paintings, especially of the mystery of details invisible to the viewer, such as a buttonhole-shaped navel of Mary in an Annunciation hanging high in a Palazzo. Why would painters do such things? Arasse does not answer the question. Walter Swennen, consulted by me on this enigma, replied: ‘because they paint for God’.

I mention Daniel Arasse in this text about the work of Walter Swennen, written in 2016.” Hans Theys
