Behind a rather boring title is a book that, in a very accessible way, summarizes recent literature criticizing the society of waste by trying to understand its origins. Baptiste Monsaingeon, a sociologist, has dedicated his career to this issue. At the heart of his book, which was also his doctoral thesis, is a proposal also put forward by Sabine Barles 15 years ago: the waste, which could seem a universal of any civilization, is in fact an invention of modernity. To put in a box, in a bag, in a container, to push back behind the scenes of society, to burn, to crush or to bury material resources would have seemed really strange to any other sapiens than modern man.
