Originally published in 1938 by Robert Capa who was 24 years old at the time, Death in the Making retraces the first year of the Spanish Civil War with his images, those of photographer Gerda Taro who lost her life on the Spanish front in 1937, and those of David “Chim” Seymour to capture a passionate vision and commitment to one of the greatest struggles for democracy. All three followed for a year the struggle of those who fought against Franco. This new remastered edition was produced with new scans of original prints and negatives. It reproduces its layout, created by the photographer André Kertész, as well as the preface by the American writer Jay Allen. It is enriched with a new text by Kristen Lubben, which retraces the history of this publication. The resulting images – photographs of the front and daily life, portraits of soldiers and civilians – bear witness to the various aspects of the conflict, from the excitement of the early days to the most poignant realities of modern warfare.
