László KrasznahorkaiLe Baron Wenckheim est de retour
Baron Béla Wenckheim, who has spent most of his life in Argentina, decides to return to his hometown in Hungary. This trip also allows him to escape the numerous debts he has incurred in the casinos of Buenos Aires. But his return causes confusion, as many people have high expectations of his ability to save the city from bankruptcy, seeing him as a wealthy benefactor, or even a saviour, when in fact he is rather penniless. These misunderstandings provoked an incredible whirlwind of rumours, gossip and misunderstandings involving local politicians, the media and the general public. László Krasznahorkai’s virtuoso editing of the speeches and speeches of the various parties is brilliant, with many ellipses and unexpected turns of events. As a threat of unknown origin emerges and the city’s isolation increases, fear sets in and questions the relationship of each person to the other, to the foreigner and more generally to the world beyond borders.
