Anne-Marie ProulxLe jardin d'après
“Anne-Marie Proulx constructed her book of photographs by following the paths of the protagonist of the novel Le premier jardin (1988) by Quebec author Anne Hébert. She is loosely based on the way a New World city is imagined through the eyes of a theatre actress inhabited by the women who came before her, as well as by the roles she herself has been called upon to play in her career and in the seasons of her personal life.
The first garden is a land on which sits a city that is never named, that is hardly ever seen, but in which are the beginnings of stories, pieces of truths and ctions as intangible as the light that settles on a wall, on the surface of the water or on the trees in eur. Through the details of textures, of lights, of a life that touches the streets and buildings, the city is revealed as a character, as a woman’s body.
In this garden planted behind the great facades, invasive roles sleep, ephemeral, seasonal, perennial lives.”
