In the world where Jonas lives, war, poverty, unemployment and divorce do not exist. Inequality does not exist. Disobedience and revolt do not exist. Harmony reigns in the family units carefully constituted by the committee of wise men. People who are too old, as well as unfit newborns, are “enlarged” – no one knows exactly what that means. Only one person in the community really knows. Only she knows what the world was like when there were still animals, when the human eye could see colours, when people fell in love.
