For the first time, this book offers a comprehensive historical study, from sketchbooks to the most accomplished drawings, including academics and preparatory sketches by Gustave Courbet. The mystery surrounding his activity as a draftsman has so far been little explored, and this is all the more surprising since some of the drawings are absolutely remarkable. This work is published on the occasion of the bicentenary of Courbet’s birth and is the result of a Franco-Swiss project by the following institutions: Société Courbet, Musée Courbet, Musée Jenisch Vevey, Musée d’Orsay.
