“The historical discipline has been present at the Musée d’Orsay since its prefiguration: an art museum, Orsay is also a museum which, through the diversity of its collections, shows an era of political, economic, social, media and artistic revolutions. It is in the continuity of this original link between history and art history, and in order to give an account of this fundamental period today, that this book, made up of eighty notes, classified in chronological order (from the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th), proposes to reinstate the museum’s collections in a worldwide context. The author proposes a commentary on famous or little-known works (painting, furniture, sculpture, photography, etc.), following the method of world history. This will reveal the major movements that run through a world that is much more connected than we thought – past and present.
