For over fifty years, the National Theatre in London has always paid close and particular attention to the promotion of these plays through the medium of posters. Painted, drawn, photographic or typographical, each creation is the reflection of an era and its trends. Over the years, only five graphic designers have succeeded one another in creating these posters. The first, Ken Briggs, was followed by Richard Bird, Michael Mayhew, Charlotte Wilkinson and Ollie Winser. In the course of this book, Rick Poynor compiles texts and graphic archives and offers us both “a history of design in an institution central to British cultural life and a case study of how the poster as a medium has evolved in Britain over the last half-century. »
