Marie-Pascale Gildemyn, Nicola Mafessoni, Eric RinckhoutPaul Gees : Tension, Balance, Risk, Stability
“Paul Gees occupies a special place on the Belgian art scene. Since 1980, Gees has been exploring the relationship between nature and culture in his work. His sculptures embody conceived compositions in which balance, tension and a refined sense of proportion predominate. The well-considered use of wood, metal and stone is striking. Metal is given a constructive and space-determining meaning, well-dimensioned wood forms a dynamic component and unprocessed stone provides natural mass. From the confrontation between these traditional materials, tense opposites emerge in a fragile balance: ‘a contemporary alchemist, who elicits energy from matter’, according to art critic Eric Rinkhout.”
