Postdocument (Reader)
This reader brings together the first 8 issues of Postdocument, the magazine on exhibition photography.
Published since 2010 by art historian Remi Parcollet and artists Aurélien Mole and Christophe Lemaitre, Postdocument has been dedicated to the photography of artworks in the exhibition context. It showcases a curated selection of pictures taken by amateur or professional photographers next to an extended caption. Each issue features exhibition views selected according to one of the 16 permanent entries making up the published pictures’ captions (title, institution, courtesy, photographer…). Postdocument will ultimately consist of 16 issues.
Midway of the entire project, the Postdocument Reader reshapes the previous 7 issues under the direction of graphic design studio Spassky Fischer.
Exclusively published in this book, issue number 8 focuses on the entry “Dimensions” (of the work). This eighth sequence brings together exhibition pictures taken in cultural institutions occupying post-industrial spaces. This architectural typology, given its influence on art practices and on their scales (within biennales, for example, often considered a context for production), takes part in the writing of today’s art history. The history of architecture thus informs art history in an anachronistic relationship where contemporary art echoes the productivist architecture of a former industrial time.
