ROSA ROSA ROSAE ROSAE

This artists’ book is a follow-up to the group exhibition rosa rosa rosae rosae which took over the Maison Pelgrims, the cultural centre of Saint-Gilles, in the autumn of 2021. The project addresses this place where text becomes choreography, where language, then set in rhythms and gestures, reveals itself and exhausts itself.

An allusion to a manipulated extract of a Latin declension, rosa rosa rosae rosae resonates with other echoes evoked by these “roses” subject to repetition – among them Jan Vercruysse’s Rosa/Rota series, or Gertrude Stein’s line “Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose”. Weaving these references into assumed or projected filiations, the exhibition brings together some twenty artists whose practices call upon the principle of repetition and the modalities that derive from it: recitation, translation, transposition, quotation, copying, traditionally associated with the registers of learning.
