Maxime Le BonUnlimited Joy
Maxime Le Bon plays with the conventions of press cartoons to depict burlesque situations by magnifying the most base instincts. In these pathetic sketches, there is little to distinguish a fair from a stuffy opening or a funeral from a marital spat. On the periphery of the official discourse, his drawings point to the grotesque situations created by the power of certain social norms. By presenting itself in the form of a book “in all respects”, Unlimited Joy wishes to thwart the categories with which it flirts: an artist’s book, a collection of press cartoons, a children’s book… In so doing, the book addresses the audiences of these same categories, at the risk of confusing them. The book compiles about a hundred drawings. This accumulation of ironic situations unfolds over a long sequence in which expectations are clear but never fulfilled.
